How Did I Get There: Bus 56 from accommodation
I'll leave it to you to research on the culture behind this place as it is quite a read and I feel that my paraphrasing would do it injustice. I love this post by David from THEWHOLEWORLDISAPLAYGROUND where he shares the history behind this village and the grandpa that started all of this. His post is a whole lot more informative in terms of ways to get there and tips on what to do there. (Basically I'm just writing what I did and feel LOL sorry).
✔ Accessible by bus
As much as we were scared of getting lost in Taichung after our terrible wayfinding in Day 1, we travelled to the Rainbow Village by bus from our accomodation area. Now upon further research, there seem to be several bus services that heads there.
✔ No entrance fee
✔ Food and drinks available
Yup, you read that right. Although we did not get anything, each drink comes with a souvenir cup so perhaps you can consider purchasing if you're there.
✔ Colorful from every angle
After taking photos and looking around, we were out in less than an hour. In a colorful place like this, it is really hard to take an ugly shot.
✘ Relatively crowded
As this place is quite raved online, be prepared to expect a certain crowd. A photogenic spot may be lining with people waiting to have their turn. We saw the grandpa there as well at their souvenir stall with people crowding around. Not sure if I've mistaken but I remember it being a selling point where people had to make a donation to take photo with the grandpa, hmmm.
Their Iron Man mascot may not have the time to entertain you too. At a certain point of our time there, he just plop himself down at a spot, with his arm crossed. Visitors just sat beside him to take photos. (I find the Kaonashi at Shifen way more friendly)
✔ Souvenirs available
Regardless of what you bought, each souvenir comes with a cute packaging.
My favourite part about this place is how accessible it is, and of course, how pretty it is. The culture behind this place is also really interesting to learn, making this place quite unique. It goes beyond coming here just for IG photos. However, I guess the inner art student in me may also be biased towards the aesthetics here.
